Good lawns are very ideal for every modern home. Good lawns are a difficult task not only to grow but also to maintain. All lawns just like other plants, need water to live and grow. The weather season and the type of grass planted will mostly likely affect the amount of water you use on the lawn. There are the commonly used types of grasses on lawns and they include St. Augustine, Bermuda and Buffalo.
The amount of water required by these types of grasses is relatively low as compared to the water required by the Kentucky blue grass. The weather season might also determine the amount of water used on the lawn. For example during the summer season when there is a lot of heat, there is a high rate of evaporation thus the lawn is not able to retain a lot of water. In short this means that in the summer seasons, one should ensure that the ground is well watered to avoid drying up.
On the other hand during the winter season there is less humidity thus the lawn is able to retain most of the water. In winter the rate of evaporation is relatively low thus less watering of the lawn is required. Another way to ensure the grass grows well is by applying fertilizers on the lawn. Like watering, fertilizing also depends on the weather season and the type of grass planted. The warm season grasses which include the buffalo and the Bermuda are mostly fertilized during the summer season.
The Kentucky blue grass is considered as a cold season grass thus it is fertilized mostly in the winter season. Fertilizers contain essential additives and nutrients for the plants and they include potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen. Instead of buying fertilizers, you can also make your own from home by using wood ashes, bone meal and coffee grounds. The other type of fertilizer can be made from Epsom salts, ammonia, mouthwash and beer.
Lawn care also involves regular weeding of the grass. Weeds do not grow well in areas with tall grasses thus it is important to let the grass grow for a height of more than three inches. Weeding can also be done by the use of vinegar which is strong and does not affect the grass in any way. Other than vinegar, you can also use the following methods to get rid of weeds in your lawn; using herbicides to kill the weeds, laying mulch and also pulling the weed out. Pests are also found in the lawn and can be eliminated by using different pest control substances. Some of the mostly found pests in the lawn include insects, snails and slugs. You can also save a lot of money used for buying pesticides and hiring professionals by simply cleaning the lawn. Regular mowing of the grass allows it to grow thick thus another important method of lawn care.
